Racism The last refuge of the hypocrit Last thursday, Navin Ramgoolam attended a meeting of a so called socio-cultural organisation called the Human Service Trust whose leaders have appointed themselves as guardians of the Indo Mauritian communities. Why they call themselves the Human Service Trust is a mystery as the Hindu Service Trust would perhaps more accurately reflect the rabid ethnocentricity on display at that meeting. Perhaps the leaders of that organisation are only too aware that most Hindus regard them as a bunch of self serving opportunists who use religion in order to advance their own selfish, personal interests. I will return to the Human Service Trust later as I want to devote most of this article to the disgraceful comments made at that meeting by the man who wants to be our Prime Minister in less than two months time. It is considered fair game during an electoral campaign for politicians to verbally attack each other and to criticise the policies of the opposite party. There is nothing wrong with that and all those who choose to put themselves in the public eye know and accept these realities of political life. During the recent electoral campaign in the United Kingdom, the Conservative party leader Michael Howard put Tony Blair's integrity at the centre of his campaign and regularly called him a liar ; Blair depicted Howard as someone flirting with racism with his constant attacks on immigrants and predicted that Howard's policies appealing to the basest human instincts will be rejected by the British people. We now know that Blair won with a majority of 67 and showed that negative campaigning can never replace sound economic policies. Why does Ramgoolam think that statements reeking of putrid racism will convince us to vote for him ? Extreme sycophancy Mauritius has an inordinate number of advisers who are nothing more than political stooges with no expertise apart from extreme sycophancy towards politicians. I have written at length about the immorality of all governments in giving advisers' posts to party workers who are barely able to write a sentence of more than five words. Ramgoolam can hardly criticise Berenger over the issue of advisers as he himself employed a similar number during his tenure of office ; all his promises of cutting waste of public money mean nothing until he tells us exactly how many advisers he will employ should he become prime minister again and whether these advisers will be experts or just koler lafis aiming for fast bucks at our expense. I am trying to choose my words very carefully to mask the intense anger that I feel towards anyone displaying bullying and racist tendencies. As I have said before, there is nothing wrong in politicians criticising each other in order to gain a political advantage. But to use a meeting designed for maximum communal exploitation as the setting for targetting one adviser by name (and therefore by race) is disgraceful and reflects badly on anyone hoping to lead a multiracial country. It is beyond the pale and is not the conduct that any reasonable person would expect of a potential leader of the country. I do not know Jean-Mée Desveaux nor do I know exactly what he does as adviser to Bérenger ; I assume that Ramgoolam must have valued his expertise because he asked him to stay as adviser in 1997 following Bérenger's departure. So why mention him by name now ? I am told there are around 250 advisers of all colours and of varying degrees of competence ranging from the excellent to the useless and it is statistically improbable that his name could have come out by mere accident. Distasteful message Ramgoolam told his audience that a vote for Jeeha is really a vote for Desveaux. Perhaps I am very stupid but a proper translation of that pearl of wisdom given in a highly communal context results in this distasteful message : your vote for certain Hindus is really a vote for the white man. Let us look at the facts regarding M. Desveaux : as far as I know, Desveaux is not standing for election and has never made any political declarations that may justify attacks by politicians ; he has never been accused of any impropriety, has not sexually harassed anyone, has not stolen trees belonging to the state, has not accepted back handers or commissions on molletons, has no links with Teeren Appasamy, does not spend an inordinate amount of time in England when he should be doing the job that we pay him to do, and has never seen his name linked to the many scandals involving politicians from all parties and religious backgrounds. His competence, probity, and integrity have never been questioned and the worse thing that anyone has ever called him is super conseiller, as if this puts him in the same league as the large number of thieves who, whilst taking a break from their favourite hobby of stealing millions from us, are moralising about the evils of corruption. His name does not appear in the Air Mauritius "black diary" and no one has ever mentioned him as an active participant in any scandal involving corruption, nepotism or the theft of public money. So, I ask again, why mention his name now ? Was it a slip of the tongue or a calculated appeal to the basest instincts of one segment of the electorate ? I am afraid it is the latter and I fervently hope that the Hindu community will treat such an appeal with the contempt it deserves. It is the height of hypocrisy to mention Desveaux's name in a cheap bid for votes whilst at the same time consorting with the Director of Rogers & Co. Preposterous equation A true Mauritian will never ask people to vote for him because he claims to represent a specific community ; it is degrading and deeply insulting to the electorate. We are being taken for absolute morons by people who want us to believe that someone who attends the same religious establishments as us is somehow better able to defend our interests than someone of another religion or race. Where is the humanity in this preposterous equation ? What about the character of the candidate that will show us whether he is a decent person worthy of our vote ? Ramgoolam should know that a vote for Jeeha is precisely that : a vote for Jeeha as an individual and for the party he represents. To say that a vote for Jeeha is a vote for Desveaux is to stand logic on its head and is unworthy of any future prime minister because the racial connotations are too bloody obvious. And what about the Human Service Trust ? There is no humanity in targetting anyone merely because his skin colour is different. It cannot provide a service for all Mauritians when it uses uncouth, racist language to offend other organisations doing a decent job in helping the disadvantaged. It now has to justify the trust that the government has in an organisation that will draw Rs 1 245 000 of taxpayers' (which includes Desveaux's) money in the current financial year. I, for one, deeply resent the fact that some part of my income tax goes towards funding the lifestyle of some incorrigibly racist idiot. Dhundev Bauhadoor's only claim to fame so far is his contribution to the greenhouse effect by chopping down trees that did not belong to him ; he probably thinks that the lakhri chor sobriquet is a term of endearment which allows him to make outrageous statements in public. He ought to know that there is much more to hinduism than the wearing of kurthas and prominent tikkas and that hinduism is above all a generosity of spirit that embraces the humanity of everyone irrespective of race or religion. Gandhi paid for his life because a racist, intellectually blind, and stupid hindu could not come to terms with his Hinduism which allowed him to see all Indians who happen to follow all the great religions of the universe living peacefully in the same country. I believe most Hindus will view the latest appeal to racism with distaste and contempt. Ramgoolam is in grave danger of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory ; he must surely realise that an appeal to the basest human instincts will result in getting the votes of only vile people who view racism as something to be proud of and alienate the vast majority of Mauritians who judge people for the content of their character and not the religion or race that they happen to belong to. He should read Desveaux cri de coeur published in saturday's l'Express and feel utterly ashamed of himself. We are all used to politicia**houting at each other in the National Assembly that si to enn zom, sort deor, in a ludicrous display of machismo that is deeply incongruous with the pot bellies, fat jowls, and breathlessness on display ; let me suggest a variation on that theme and tell Ramgoolam that si to enn zom, telefonn Desveaux ek dir li : "Sorry". It may be that Ramgoolam's behaviour last thursday was the result of wrong advice ; in that case, he ought to quickly avail himself of the services of**ood adviser, someone who will advise him that politics does not need to descend to the level of the gutter in order to be successful ; a super conseiller perhaps ; someone like Jean-Mée Desveaux.
